Man shot by troopers after car crash near Grant Park, GBI says
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A chase near the Grant Park neighborhood ended in an exchange of gunfire involving the Georgia State Patrol Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
According to GSP, the incident happened in the area of Interstate 20 and Boulevard.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation claims that around 3:30 p.m., Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to stop a car that was “driving erratically” on I-20. The driver fled the traffic stop, driving onto Boulevard SE before running a red light, hitting a vehicle and slamming into a light pole.
The driver, identified as 36-year-old Ramadan Saleem, got out of the car and fired at the officers. The officers shot back and hit Saleem. Saleem was taken to the hospital.
Officers say two guns were found near Saleem.
Cell phone and security camera footage shows a car crash near an intersection, followed by a person falling to the ground. Gunshots can be heard in cell phone video obtained by Atlanta News First. Several witnesses also claim to have heard gunshots and seen someone driven away from the scene in an ambulance.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case due to the fact a GSP trooper was involved in the shooting.
